David Salle is an American artist that helped define the Post-Modern sensibility by combining figuration with an extremely varied pictorial language. His latest exhibition at the Skarstedt Gallery is a testament to his love of color, collage, and unique creativity. The exhibit opened in London in March 2019 to rave reviews, with critics fascinated by how Salle manages to establish relationships of everything in the painting to everything else. 

It's not often that you see meat intersecting with a broomstick in a painting, but such is the complication, intrigue, and conjoining of Salle's paintings. Stability is the opposite of what Salle goes for in his creations, and Musicality and Humour was no exception to this golden rule he's made for himself. There is no one singular narrative to Salle's work, so viewers are left trying to form their own story to tell. 

Salle's work can be described as a mix of New Yorker style cartoons combined with Pop art, contrasting the old school world of black and white with more colorful modern ideals. While it might look frantic and all over the place, each motif is painted with purpose. There can be harmony in discord, as Salle proves several times with his works in this collection.
